Strangely one of the least well known of regions in Spain, Murcia is home to many a luxurious spa, health center, natural salt lagoon and a great deal of sunshine, all the year round. In fact, the small, autonomous region in the Mediterranean, lying in between the coastal provinces of Almeria and Alicante, to the southeast of the Spanish mainland, is part of the coastline known as Costa Calida— the Warm Coast.
It’s the climate of Murcia that has helped to transform the region into a place which is especially appealing for the variety of sporting opportunities available. With average temperatures, in the winter, of 15 to 20 degrees, and beautiful clear skies, with around 2, 800 hours of sunshine a year and very little rain, Murcia is a near-perfect place to try out water sports, hiking, cycling or of course, golfing at one of Murcia’s many golf resorts, of which the Polaris World resorts are among the best.
If it’s water sports you’re after, the shallow salty waters of the Mar Menor, one of Europe’s largest saltwater lagoons, guarantee a really unique experience. Once open to the sea, Mar Menor (meaning small sea) is now a coastal lake of 170 km of warm saltwater. Because these waters are so high in salt content, they are used for their curative properties, and as a practice area for many water sports such as canoeing and windsurfing. At spas around the lake, you can also have hot salt baths and mud treatments, which have been famed to cure problems such as rheumatism and arthritis.
The Mar Menor golf resort, one of many throughout the Murcia region, and surrounded, too, by pools, promises an especially pleasant time. Nearby, you can enjoy five star accommodation, and several great restaurants, which use fresh produce from locally grown organic vegetables, to fresh fish caught from the Mar Menor or the Mediterranean Sea. The Nomad restaurant, in particular, serves Mediterranean Cuisine, while the Aqua Restaurant has been given a four-fork rating for its more modern Spanish cuisine. Dining at either would finish a day of golfing very nicely.
Sporting trips like golf holidays can be pricey, which makes them seem inaccessible in these recessional times. If you don’t want to miss out, you could book a Polaris World property direct from the owner from this website at very reasonable cost, or book a package holiday through a company with a sufficiently varied number of deals to help you find exactly what you want. It’s advisable to check out Thomas Cook’s offers on holidays—to a number of destinations worldwide—this summer. Very helpfully, for example, one of Thomas Cook’s deals includes 10% reductions on family bookings
